It's Now the Compaq Houston Marathon; Houston's Top Technology Firm Powers the City's Largest Single-Day Sporting Event
HOUSTON, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news), Houston's largest employer and premier technology company, along with the city of Houston today announced Compaq's three-year commitment to sponsor the Houston Marathon. To celebrate the announcement, hundreds of Compaq employees and local dignitaries gathered at the company's worldwide headquarters in Houston to witness Mayor Lee Brown proclaim August 18, 2000, as the first ``Compaq Houston Marathon Day.''
``With Compaq as the official sponsor of the Houston Marathon, both runners and spectators will experience the way in which technology can improve the performance of athletes and enhance the experience for their fans,'' said Mayor Brown. ``Today's announcement further exemplifies Compaq's leadership and commitment to the community.''
Locally, Compaq is also a major sponsor of the Compaq Center, the Houston Rockets, the Houston Comets, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Race officials expect more than 7,000 runners, 5,000 volunteers and some quarter-million spectators to attend the 2001 Compaq Houston Marathon -- the 29th running of the race on Jan. 14. Kickoff and early registration will be held in Memorial Park Monday, Sept. 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
``The 2001 race truly will be 'powered by Compaq' in terms of funding, employee involvement and, most of all, technology expertise,'' said David Hannah, Compaq Houston Marathon race director. ``No doubt Compaq's involvement will mean an even more exciting community event and a new experience for everyone involved, from veteran runners to first-time spectators.''
Applications for the Compaq Houston Marathon and companion five-kilometer fun run will be available online at www.compaqhoustonmarathon.com and at many area running and fitness stores and facilities beginning Sept. 11, or by calling the marathon office at 713-957-3453.
Administered by an executive committee of local volunteers, the Compaq Houston Marathon is a founding member of Running USA, a new joint venture of leading American road races and USA Track & Field.
