Jim, Re: ...so you must be joking...

Not really serious, you are right. Still, I just wanted to point out a problem that has been delegated on this thread to Mani as the thread moderator: Epinephrine versus Adrenalin, Paul versus Paulie. What are the criteria to interfere – should he or does he have to interfere at all on this level?

Besides the abundance of information on SI, I am very much attracted by the way of social interaction on both AMD threads. Somehow I am still with tejek, although not so radically objecting any form of moderation. However from the two threads, the action now is clearly on the moderated.

From my lurking on SI threads I am a growing believer in the high value of information and education offered by the active participants. And it is quite obvious that the more senior posters do have a socializing and sometimes domesticating effect on newcomers.

I do not disagree with the moderated thread's overall aim of courteous interaction. My worry is however the fact that moderation reduces collective energy to keep the thread clean and going. The real danger would then be that the thread deteriorated over the time into an old people's club (probably more old men's club) with mutually nice interchange... with periodical awareness of the need of new ideas from new posters with other background ... always knowing that any disturbance by a newcomer can be treated as if he was an intruder who does not obey some unwritten laws.

Regards,
Manfred

PS: Personally I miss Monty with his vivid contributions (albeit sometimes sensitive reactions to some replies). If he does not post any more here due to the repellent effect from this thread this would be a hint that moderation should not be to tight. IMO.
