The Business Of Intellectual Property
Your patent strategy may well determine your company's future

by Peter Buxbaum
[ August 09, 2000 ]

On the business front, as on the military battlefield, the conventional wisdom teaches us that cool heads ought to prevail. But, when it comes to developing an intellectual-property strategy, focusing on what's cool can lead a company astray.
It's not at all unusual for engineers and business managers to differ on the issue of the patenting of innovations. Patenting every company innovation, no matter how cool, would severely drain the resources of any creative company. An intellectual-property strategy that advances the business plan may mean disregarding the cool in favor of the critical.

Hi all; A comment on the Rambus situation from an Intel process engineer (with correct link):

After I wrote:
"The explosion in cheap pins is largely what has made RDRAM out of date. I suppose that Intel didn't think this would happen way back when they inked the deal with Rambus."

His response:

"That's for sure. This whole Rambus thing is the first time that I can really recall, most people that I know, sitting around the table at lunch, and commenting on what 'a stupid decision the company made on that one'. And in my opinion, they waited way too long before changing their minds." #reply-14235113
