My thought when reading your post was: I sure do hope they get those 3" wafers working asap. It seems that the only thing that is going to hold back this dynamo is whether they can ramp production fast enough. Seems like a good problem to have.

uw

the rumor i have..and i repeat rumor...is ge wants cree's leds. i was told but cannot verify yet...that ge asked cree if they could produce trillions of SiC leds.
cree presently produces about 500 million per year by my calculation... assuming trillions is at least 2 trillion...that would be 4,000x increase in production.... please check my math.

The math is right but I have to wonder - Just what would GE be doing with all of those LEDs? If they were to use 2000 per unit, that would then be 1 billion units. Don't think they make that many anything, but they might.
More LEDs per unit? I don't know. How many LEDs does it take to do something? And at what cost? If I put a million LEDs into a unit, I need to then sell 2 million said units. And if the LEDs are a penny each, that is $10,000 just for the LEDs. What kind of product is this that I am selling 2 million of with $10K worth of photon generators in it.
Love to jump on the positive side of this rumor, but I just don't see the numbers working. Any comments?

William
