G,

The muddled thinking evident
in some of these articles is beyond ridiculous.

No argument there. These analysts need to come out and make statements every so often though even if they are WAY off base- to attempt to show investors that their services are necessary. It wouldn't be profitable if everyone invested in stocks took a buy and hold strategy. So they do "research," churning out their opinion of the same conference calls we listen to, and their take on the same third party information such as provided by Dataquest that we see every day. Sometimes they even try to fan the flames of panic by yelling "fire" in a crowded investing theater, such as was done by SSB's JJ on July 5th. I bet at least some people came to use SSB's services after that ugly downturn, convinced that the services they provide are now necessary. Even though the same person basically did a 180 a week ago and said through his actions that he had no clue what he was talking about with his upgrade of MU.

But nobody should ever be fooled that these people do not have alterior motives when they release "opinions."
