White House travel tab exceeds $290 million
August 18, 2000
Web posted at: 9:46 a.m. EDT (1346 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The 159 international trips made by President Clinton -- the most widely traveled American president -- and other administration officials since 1997 have cost taxpayers at least $292 million, according to a report published Friday.

A General Accounting Office review of the administration's travel expenses said that most of the costs were paid by the Pentagon, which provides the two jetliners that serve as Air Force One and other aircraft.

The GAO study, which was obtained by The Washington Post, was requested by six Republican senators, most of whom declined to comment until the study is made public.

However, one of the lawmakers, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Alabama, called the costs "exorbitant."

A Clinton spokesman accused the Republicans of requesting the report for political purposes. The White House said the type of expenses were similar to the expenditures of other administrations.

The GAO said that Clinton's 27 trips during the last three years account for 85 percent, or $247 million, of the total aircraft cost, the Post said. Next week he plans to fly to Africa.

The Post said the Republican lawmakers did not request comparable data on other administrations.

The report is scheduled for release next month.

Good morning SOnny, today we have one of the hotest days of the year so far, 29 degree centigrade in the shade. Can't even play golf in this heat!

The Kursk affair is taking a sad term. It now seems that the crew are all dead and we have to content ourselves with
officail Russian version of the "FACTS.!!!" As you may know
the construction of this vessel started in the Soviet area
but it was completed in 1994. when more than 150 of Russian
atomi subs were being scutled for lack of funds. This sub
was comssioned at the moment of great fianacial crisis when there was no money for furter training of the crew or buying
fuel and spare parts. It was in mediterranean Sea a few years ago simulating and attack on US fleet and since then
it had not left for the sea backs of lack of money. In the
armed forces, men rust faster then their equipments, if they don't get training. You wait and see, Russians are preparing to pass the blame on the US for having casued the
sub to sink! There is story of two explosions. They will caim that it was casued by some un-named vessel, accusing US without saying it right out.

Sonny ---Finaly got back to the Forest article ---This is the same exact issue that we had with Yellowstone about seven years ago . By fighting the fires we are not letting nature take it's course thus the underbrush keeps building up until we have a year like this with the lack of moisture . We need to protect people houses and we need to set fires in normal years to control the fuel source for these fires . A hands off policy is waiting for a disaster to happen . The environmentalist are wrong in this area .
Also reminds me of our lack of an energy policy and air transportation policy . Their was a statement on CNNFN of what has happen to these two issues over the last ten years and as usual we are our own worse enemies . GDP has gone up 64 % in the last ten years but we have not built a new major airport in the United States ( in Denver we replaced an existing airport ) in the last twenty five years . So we double the number of airplanes and wonder why we have a major traffic congestion problem . On the energy front part of the dramatic increase in gas price in the mid west was the lack of refinery capacity . We have not built a new refinery in the US in the last ten years due to environmental concerns . Their has to be a balance to these issues that we have controlled over . I am normally not a big fan of big government but when we need a rational national policy someone in the capital should step forward and take the lead and the heat to resolved the above issues . Just wishing ---I guess
