Dan3, I think you AMD guys should start thinking about the situation regarding AMD cutting prices as the article below reflects. Since Duron did not make the school scene, one can only wonder how Q3 numbers will be skewed. Now it is surfacing that AMD is cutting prices big time, which is hard to reconcile with Jerry’s declaration during the cc that there would be no price war because market conditions were so great the Big Gorilla would not resort to cutting prices. Well then, what’s the monkey on AMD’s back? Somber, hmm?

How Low Can They Go?...... - 2:51 pm EST - Vince
Of course I'm referring to CPU prices, namely AMD and their current "slash and burn" philosophy on pricing. What has happened over the last week or so is unprecedented in scope, with AMD cutting prices on some of their CPUs by hundreds of dolars, with their highest-end 1 GHz processors sitting at well under $500 USD. That compares to the Intel P3 1 GHz at over $1,000 USD and features a 850-866 MHz CPU at the $500 USD price level. I guess using Mexican clay for their CPU cores has allowed AMD to really cut costs.
The most amazing aspect of these cuts is that now the AMD Thunderbird is lower priced than a similar-speed Athlon. This isn't really that surprising when you consider how cheap it is to pop out Socket A T-Birds, but I would think AMD would position these chips as a higher-end model. Also, if you've got a Slot A motherboard and are itching for an upgrade, run out and nab an Athlon 850-900 right now. These puppies are going fast and the supply is shrinking.
The Duron pricing is simply out of this world, with a Duron 600 coming in at around $70 USD. I can't even find a recent Intel chip for that low a price, and AMD seems fired up to capture the budget desktop market. The only problem with the Duron line is that it currently tops out at 700 MHz, and doesn't really offer anything over the current Athlon or T-Bird chips.
If you want some additional info on current CPU prices and vendors, check out the latest news on CPU pricing, head on over to Sharky Extreme's Weekly CPU Price Guide. On a side note, SE also seems to have cracked both their Thunderbird and Duron processors during testing....
