Andreas - RE: "Easy: To give them some more publicity and help the stock price (remember it was at $54 just before the announcement!). I really like this kind of PR, especially because it doesn't contain any false statements. They just said they were now shipping the processors and expected them to be available on August, 28th. We will certainly see systems from Gateway and Compaq among others then."

Thanks for pointing out the stock price idea. I didn't think of it that way because I never expected AMD to do that (not that I'm against it as long it is truthful). It is interesting to see AMD creating HYPE of their own, rather than letting Intel get all of it.

"Of course, the press release wasn't necessary. It was just nice PR and an indication that AMD finally starts to care about their public image and the stock price."

I agree completely. The press release was just something to chew on and create HYPE. The market bought it and the stock price went up. If the stock was trading at $100 and the split and IDF weren't the coming Monday I bet AMD would have waited until Aug. 28 to do a press release. No one can now complain AMD doesn't care about its shareholders. ;)

"This time AMD is shipping in full quantities and we will have plenty of Pricewatch listings at the end of the month. And keep in mind that journalist from all over the world already have production samples of the CPU for several weeks now. I really don't see how this qualifies for a "paper launch". Actually it's far better than the original 1.0 Ghz launch in March."

I'm just annoyed the announcements aren't consistent. Sometimes a press release comes out the day the processor is actually available and sometimes it announces it will be available some time in the future. I bet the decision depends on what the situation is at that current time. With 1GHz AMD wanted to beat Intel, with 1.1GHz AMD was boosting the stock and pointing out Athlon is one year old, with Duron they wanted to say it came out in June like they said it would. I should realize AMD can't please everyone all the time. ;)
