PW, [edited] Catlady mentioned Opera and I'm intrigued. From their site >Opera without Java is less than 2 MB and is usually downloaded within a couple of minutes, even on a slower modem. However, it may take a little longer as our server and mirrors are very popular, so please be patient.<

opera.com

[edit] about 2MB without and 9 with Java.
I doubt I'll get far on the web without Java?

pw and thread,

not too long ago, some of us were discussing a method of emptying the windows temp file, wherein a couple dos commands are added to the autoexec.bat file to automatically dump the temp contents during boot-up.

i just read a recent piece in pcworld that points out a flaw in this method, namely...

"Certain installation programs leave files in the Temp folder, reboot your computer, then use those files to finish the installation. If you empty Temp via autoexec.bat as I stated, the installation won't work."

the article goes on to suggest a very good solution...

"The solution is to put this deltree command in the StartUp menu, since programs in this menu run only after any such installation routines."

the full article, with all of the necessary steps, can be found at

pcworld.com

i'd add that for those of us who endeavor to make this change, and who already have the

deltree /y c:\windows\temp
md c:\windows\temp

commands added into their autoexec.bat file, don't forget to edit them out.

:)
