Cosimo why should oil companies put themselves out of existence to justify your moral code? Don't they do enough good work just keeping your car going forward? That type of thinking was not invented by you but it did chase producers out of North America and made you dependent on foreign oil. Short sighted government policy made it uneconomic to replace depleted reserves in North America. Half of what you pay at the pump is a tax, half of the balance goes to the refinery and the rest to the upstream producer. Have you ever thought that our effect on nature might actually buy us a few more thousand years by delaying the next ice age? There is no need to answer that because you don't know, nobody does. A massive methane burp may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Volcanic rocks degassing over several thousand years caused the massive fish kills evidenced in the fish scale shale of 98 million years ago. Fast quick geothermal events cause more damage in a blink of an eye than human kind could achieve at present production consumption rates over millions of years. 20,000,000 Buffalo roamed the prairie a few hundred years ago. Eating all the grass and pulverizing underbrush they kept it trimmed like a park. Cattle later did much the same thing. Clinton/Gore policy have taken cattle off BLM lands all over the western states. Power line right of ways could not be cleaned, there is a possibility an owl habitat might be disturbed. This thinking caused the worst set of fires in U.S. history. Who should be assessed for the economic damage suffered by the inhabitants of these places? What moral criteria should be used to judge the short term thinking of the Washington elite who caused the infernos?
