That sure ain't something that would just happen.
Most of the life present today on earth built up from the information and technology of previous species. Most of the high energy consuming creatures could not have evolved if the blue-green algae had not re-engineered the atmosphere to have an energy rich, high oxygen content.

machines don't have nearly the complexity that life does; one couldn't expect them to just happen. And one would not expect a bird to just happen in the pre-cambrian when life was too simple to "create" a bird.

Once you throw the self aware humans into the equation the scale is much much bigger, but it is really just one of scale and not of kind. A dinosaur could not have evolved until amphibians solved the puzzle of leaving the ocean without drying out. Machines cannot evolve until humans set up the conditions in which a machine can evolve.

It seems bizzare, and some may say that machines don't evolve, they are created, but fundamentally the process is the same. Information is reproduced, modified, and selections are made amongst the modifications. In this case it is not the information of our physical DNA that is being passed on, but information from our books and brains.

I can imagine that in a few million years when machines have taken off through airless space to colonize the galaxy that they may have forgotten the history of the first self aware machine, and won't be able to figure out how they evolved.
