OT Re: Attrition rates of female engineering students

Thanks for sharing your experience. To some extent, I think students may be discouraged by the misleading statistics based on very small populations, just as you stated.

Most of all, like you, I believe that opportunities and experiences impact individuals, male or female. I still cringe when I hear mothers tell their daughters they weren't any good at math either and go on to explain that it doesn't really matter. Grrrrr.

Somewhere I heard statistics about the differences in education and earning power for women who took even one more math course than required. Wish I could find that again.

If parents and teachers don't realize the value of math and science courses for females at a very early age, female students will not be in a position to choose higher level courses at any age. This inability will limit their career choices and their career paths.

Gotta start young, with toys and with value and respect for math and science. We need to respect America's female students if we're going to make a difference.

Rant off <g>. Thanks for speaking up.

BTW Want to add that a 90 year old woman who decided to go to college to fulfill her dreams told me of her struggles with trigonometry and her determination to master calculus. Talk about inspiration! We met at an Astronomy Society of the Pacific meeting at San Diego State. I still think of her and wish I had contact information so I could keep in touch. Hope she's out there doing her thing.
