I don't have as much confidence as you do in retail PC sales this Christmas season. Personally I think the price cuts are timed perfectly to make a GHz processor a sought after Christmas gift. My concern is that the cuts are too steep and AMD have misjudged the demand they will generate. I change my mind often, not always based on the facts. AMD's price cuts have me a little nervous, the worst case scenario is if they can make 'em but can't sell 'em. If AMD sold the 1GHz Athlon at $50 would they not sell all they could produce? So the question is not really whether they can sell them but at what ASP. If we had seen any volumes of Intel's 1GHz processors I would also be more cautious. But in terms of binsplits it seems that all AMD's processors are in the top 20-30% (my observation only, no concrete evidence here) of Intel's range. So either there is a disastrous price war (unlikely given the OEM's complaints about increasing shortages) or the pie is just going to be sliced a little more in AMD's favor.
