What is unmentioned in the Britannica article is Washington treating them like a legitimate constituency. The Klan had quite a bit of influence with lawmakers. They lobbied heavily for prohibition.

It's interesting that the Klan was stronger in places like Indiana and Ohio than they were in the South in those days.
