"My husband went over our return last night and couldn't find any red flags that might have triggered an IRS investigation." .... The IRS says she and her husband owe a whopping $1,500.

I recognize those letters, this is not an audit, they screwed up their forms (i.e. did not send in forms that matched the forms sent in by other institutions). The audit will come later if they can't clear up the discrepency. If it were an audit the IRS would not already have a figure in mind for what they owed.

They are just blowing smoke to deflect the fact that they were pushing their deductions too hard.
