Dan, Re: On the other hand, Dell is improbable, though of course hope springs eternal here.

Yes, I think so, too, but this shouldn't stop us to collect information concerning a possible Dell breakthrough some time in the future.

If Intel screws-up with P4 (either no volume or low performance) Dell won't have any choice but choosing AMD. We know that P3 won't go >1.1 Ghz before the next stepping / core revision (2nd half of 2001). We also know that Thunderbird will be at 1.2 Ghz soon and probably at 1.5 Ghz early next year. So there will be a gap of over 400 Mhz to Intels fastest P3 system for months(!). It's IMO quite possible that in Q1 2001 1.0 Ghz will be the entry-level for Thunderbird. If Intel can't supply Dell with large quantities of P4s then Dell will fall to AMD. And even if P4 performs well there's still the high price and the dependency on Rambus memory.

I'm really hoping that Intel will give us some clues on P4 performance on Tuesday (if they don't that should also give us some clues). That will be a major indicator of AMDs performance early next year. AMD will still do great if P4 performs great but if it fails to do so ... then only the sky is the limit. ;-) (and we won't have to speculate about Dell any more then)
