Santa Cruz is a great choice if he has any interest in high-tech or the sciences, because you are right next door to silicon valley for a summer job, etc. but Santa Cruz is a world away in terms of lifestyle etc. I know a lot about Santa Cruz because they do a lot of partnering with the Berkeley campus for astronomy etc. Great weather too, nothing like you have in Dallas. The downside is... no Neiman Marcus for 100+ miles... <gg>
