He said that he thought GM was a pompous ass who was following trends as much as predicting them

I don't know anything about Moore's personality, but I think he follows trends more than he predicts them. I also think he'd feel complimented by that thought.

tek,

<< sitting at brunch today next a tech consultant/angel ... He said that he thought GM was a pompous ass who was following trends as much as predicting them, and that the internal workings of Chasm Group were so far from what they were supposed be (according the book's principles) as make one quite skeptical >>

Merlin, BB, and Uncle have all commented on the "tech consultant/angel" comments about GM. I thought I would add a few and echo their thoughts.

Frank posed the question: "could it be that tekboy's new guru was actually the pompus ass?"

I would guess, yes. I would also wonder if the "angel" (what the heck is an angel?) has ever met GM.

Frank went on say: "Since I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Moore and later, listening his presentation at the Churchill Club in Silicon Valley, I would like offer my observation that he was as far from a "pompous ass" as one might imagine. Geoff was cordial, polite, and extremely patient in fielding questions from a horde of admirers and skeptics before, during, and after his presentation, despite being exhausted from just having flown in from the east coast where he had a similar meeting in the morning. For that matter, his demeanor, intelligence, and willingness converse with anyone without talking down them reminded me very much of Dashing Mike".

"Dashing Mike" went on to add: "I don't know anything about Moore's personality, but I think he follows trends more than he predicts them. I also think he'd feel complimented by that thought."

As I've mentioned before on this thread, GM on behalf of Chasm Group consulted my corporation from late 1997 through the end of 1998. I have listened to him make presentations twice, socialized with him briefly, and participated in 2 focused working sessions with him as a result of his consultancy to our company on 2 discontinuous innovations (smart cards & Public Key Infrastructure).

As Frank says, Geoff is "as far from a "pompous ass" as one might imagine". I can not imagine a circumstance where he would project himself as such.

... and as "Dashing Mike" suggests, I think that Geoff would indeed feel complimented by the thought that one would think that "he follows trends more than he predicts them." That is what he professes to do, and in his consultancy he suggests that corporations recognize these trends and adopt a suitable reaction.

Perhaps your "angel" is confusing Geoff with George Gilder?
