Certicom wireless solution to be used by Sony

Certicom Corp Mon 21 Aug 2000 News Release
Ms. Lorraine Kauffman reports
Sony is using Certicom's leading security technology in its first
Internet-enabled wireless application protocol (WAP) mobile phone for the
European and Asian markets.
Sony has licensed Certicom's WTLS Plus to integrate into the WAP browser
ensuring that the delivery of critical, leading-edge content remains highly
secure.
"Certicom's leadership in WAP and wireless enables Sony to provide our
customers globally with strong security from a name that is trusted
internationally," said Mick Kishida, director of business planning at
Sony's Digital Telecommunications, Europe. "Certicom's experience in
developing products that fit within the constraints and complexities of
mobile devices lead to a sure fit for our WAP phones."
Sony's new WAP-enabled handset will target young, trendy professionals and
will feature Microsoft's Mobile Explorer dual-mode browser to deliver the
kind of compelling content associated with the Sony world of video, music
and digital imaging. By using Certicom's security technology in this
browser, Sony will provide a more secure platform for protecting valuable
electronic content from theft. Certicom's WTLS Plus provides the most
advanced, standards-based, proven encryption available today.
As part of today's announced agreement, Sony will also use Certicom's
elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) technology and will include support for
Certicom's MobileTrust digital certificates in the new Sony WAP phone's
security architecture. Supporting Certicom's MobileTrust root key in the
security architecture will enable secure, authenticated WAP transactions
like stock trading, wagering and banking.
"Certicom is thrilled with the opportunity to work with Sony on the launch
of cutting-edge WAP phones for the European and Asian markets," said
Richard Depew, Certicom executive vice-president. "We believe the adoption
of WAP phones in Europe is leading the world into the realm of the wireless
Internet. Sony's global expertise and penetration will ensure that
end-users can quickly and safely send and receive content in their own
native language."
About WTLS Plus
WTLS Plus combines Certicom's ECC, SSL and embedded platform expertise to
offer a highly efficient security solution designed specifically for
wireless environments. The tool kit provides for plug-and-play integration,
enabling WAP developers to add WTLS functionality rapidly and with
confidence to their servers and constrained devices. It reduces cost by
substantially shortening development schedules and helps ensure that
sensitive applications achieve the highest industry standards for security.
Certicom provides both client and server software required for an
interoperable WAP security solution. WTLS Plus is compliant with the WTLS
1.1 specification developed by the WAP Forum.
