It is also interesting to note that organized groups which call themselves "conservative" may often espouse causes that are not conservative at all, if we take "conservative" to mean cautious, restrained, preferring the incremental step to the absolute step. They occasionally forget that the word has a meaning which predates its political applications: if I refer to a conservative river guide, I don't mean a guide who is an active Republican, I mean one who is very careful, stops frequently to scout ahead, and prefers to portage water that poses any significant degree of risk. The same affliction, naturally, is common among liberals, who often espouse causes having nothing at all to do with liberty. They really are just words, and are often as limited in value as the new age mantras chanted by His Smartness.

A couple of sentences, even several, is not a life story. You made identifying oneself with a group an issue.....Anyway, this is what I was primarily responding to: Many liberals/conservatives/whatever don't do any "acting" on the political stageat all, outside of voting once a year. But they may "talk" a lot, and spout a lot of group-think. The point is simple, and false. Most of us who are strongly motivated do act, at least by supporting groups that further our agenda. I know that several of the people with whom I am pals on the thread do........
