just something that happens Then what is the purpose? you might ask. I think self-aware beings have a purpose. Only that purpose is potentially different for each one. Anyone who is self-aware, and aware of his mortality would become depressed and suicidal unless he felt he had a reason to go on. Those who find a reason keep on living and reproduce, thereby leaving the brains of future generations programmed to find a purpose. Occasionally this misfires and someone develops an overriding goal in life to take over the world, or collect the world's largest ball of string, but usually the purpose is learned and seems to crystalize around adolesence. There is variation, as in most traits, and so you get a range from slackers to zealots. TP
