Toshiba doubles chip profit estimate for 2000/01

TOKYO, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp on Monday doubled its original consolidated operating profit forecast for its chipmaking business to 130 billion yen from 65 billion yen for the year ending next March.

The leading Japanese electronics manufacturer also forecast 1.18 trillion yen in sales from chipmaking operations, up 110 billion yen from its earlier estimate.

Earlier, Toshiba raised its consolidated net profit estimate for the year to 135 billion yen from an initial estimate of 100 billion yen and against a 28 billion yen net loss last year.

Toshiba, hit hard along with other chipmakers during a slump in the dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip market in the late 1990s, has shifted its focus to more sophisticated chips.

Prior to the announcement, Toshiba shares ended Monday trade up nearly three percent or 29 yen at 1,034 yen after the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on Sunday the company would raise its dividend by seven yen to 10 yen for the year ending next March due to solid chip business performance.
