NTAP--DeTeCSM and Network Appliance Provide Deutsche Telekom With Large-Scale Enterprise Storage Network DeTeCSM Installs 100 Network Appliance(TM) Filers With Close to 100TB for Deutsche Telekom AG, Creating the ``Largest Virtual Hard Disk Drive'' in Europe
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 21, 2000-- Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTAP - news), the leading provider of networked storage data access and content management solutions, announced today that DeTeCSM, a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, is now connecting 137,000 Deutsche Telekom workstation systems in 82 locations throughout Germany using NetApp® storage appliances (filers.) Data previously stored locally on workstation hard disks is now available throughout Telekom's corporate network, is accessible internationally, and will be automatically secured. For Deutsche Telekom, this deployment represents another important building block of their integrated office communications system. For Network Appliance, the Deutsche Telekom implementation demonstrates the scalability and data availability of NetApp solutions in the global enterprise.
``The rollout of 100 NetApp filers is the green light for what we believe is the largest NAS solution in Europe,'' said Armin Balkie, project leader at DeTeCSM. ``In the future, where the user is located will be irrelevant: as long as she has access to the company network, she will be able to access her data and documents securely and quickly.''
The NAS solution of DeTeCSM also has advantages for Deutsche Telekom in the operations arena. Existing storage resources can be scaled and expanded easily and quickly, and new resources can be integrated into multi-protocol environments including both NFS and CIFS. Administration costs of the NetApp solution are also low: users can remedy their own inadvertent data losses, and the entire filer deployment is managed centrally from DeTeCSM's six service and computer centers.
``We are proud that NetApp is being deployed as part of one of the largest storage projects in Europe, and that we have demonstrated to them our advantages over traditional enterprise solutions providers,'' said Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. ``Significantly, our performance was not the only decisive factor for Deutsche Telekom's decision. Our scalability was a great advantage, and our Snapshot technology was vital to the deployment, keeping potential downtime to a minimum and providing for simple and fast data recovery due to user error.''
