GMST--TV Guide reduces circulation by 8 pct - WSJ

NEW YORK, Aug 21 (Reuters) - TV Guide magazine cut its circulation by 8 percent to 9.9 million this summer, reflecting the struggle against a growing number of television channels and Web sites that provide their own listings, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

TV Guide, recently acquired by Gemstar International Group (NasdaqNM:GMST - news), said the decline in circulation was planned, the Journal said. For the second half of the year, the publisher has cut its circulation guarantee to 9.9 million, the newspaper added.

At its height in 1975, TV Guide's circulation ws 19.7 million, the Journal said.

To compensate, TV Guide has embarked on a strategy to develop new products under its famous brand. Joe Kiener, the co-president and co-chief operating officer of Gemstar-TV Guide International, said there could be a time when all TV Guide listings are available only electronically, the Journal reported.

The company says its cable channel reaches 54 million homes, its Web site garners three million unique monthly users, and its interactive programme guides are used by seven million subscribers, the Journal noted.

The TV Guide channel will pull in advertising revenues of close to $90 million from virtually nothing two years ago, TV Guide executives told the newspaper.

Gemstar, a provider of on-screen electronic program guides, and TV Guide completed their $14 billion stock deal last month.
