Brazil stocks poised for rocky trading

Reuters Company News - August 21, 2000 08:58

Jump to first matched term

SAO PAULO, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Brazil shares were set for a rocky ride on
Monday as investors gear up to meddle with prices before the expiration of
stock options and other players shy away ahead of key interest rate meetings,
traders said.

Volume should be substantial on options expiration day as options holders seek
to alter prices to lock in profits, traders said. But a decision on interest rates in
the United States and in Brazil set for Tuesday could deter some players.

And nervousness over economic woes in Argentina could spill over into Brazil
although Argentine markets are closed Monday.

"Most investors are afraid of doing anything aggressive," said John Carioba,
director of Indusval brokerage in Sao Paulo. "Still, the tendency in Brazil is
generally good, with economic numbers here coming out just fine."

Brazil's benchmark stock index the Bovespa sank on Friday, pulled down by
profit taking in Petrobras , the index's most heavily-weighted stock. The index
fell 2.2 percent to 17,314, its lowest level in almost two weeks.

*Shares in Petrobras, which shed 2.7 percent to 51.80 reais, and other heavily
traded stocks like phone company Telemar could lose out again if the market
slides as investors look for a quick exit from Brazil via liquid stocks.

*Investors will keep a close eye on markets in the United States as U.S.
Federal Reserve policymakers huddle to decide the direction of key interest
rates. The decision is set for Tuesday.

While players don't expect an increase in U.S. rates, the Fed meeting always
sends shock waves through markets, Carioba said.

*Brazil Central Bank policy makers are also set to decide on local rates on
Tuesday.

*Shares in Bradesco ,Brazil's No. 1 private bank, could focus attention on
Monday as the bank starts a buyback of stocks in its newly listed holding
company Bradespar at a price of 9.01 reais for a lot of 1,000 shares.

*The Bovespa has gained 5.3 percent this month in the wake of a wealth of
positive news on hearty economic growth and solid corporate profits. Moody's
Investors Service last week said it was mulling upping its rating on the country's
credit-worthiness, a move that could help reduce government and corporate
financing costs. *The index has gained 1.3 since the start of the year.
*Turnover on Friday was a meagre 559.4 million reais ($311 million)
compared with Thursday's turnover of 914 million reais ($508 million) and a
daily average of 624 million reais in July.
