(BSNS WIRE) Cirrus Logic's Audio DSP Decoders First to Support Multi-Channe
Cirrus Logic's Audio DSP Decoders First to Support Multi-Channel AAC Advanced
Audio Coding

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 21, 2000--

Targeting Digital Televisions, Set-Top Boxes and AV Receivers,
New Crystal Audio Decoders Support All Popular
International Standards

Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS), the world's market share leader
in audio chips, today launched the industry's first AAC multi-channel
audio decoders that allow electronics manufacturers to design
solutions that meet worldwide compatibility standards.
Designed for set-top boxes, digital televisions and AV receivers,
the new Crystal(R) CS49310 and Crystal CS49329 programmable DSP
devices not only support AAC -- the newest standard today -- but
additionally decode Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG-1 & 2, MPEG-2
multi-channel, and MP3. These universal chips are designed to prolong
the life of consumer products by providing the ability to download new
features and standards as they emerge.
Cirrus Logic is the only company currently offering DSP decoders
for multi-channel AAC. According to the AAC-Audio Web site:
www.aac-audio.com/applications, "The Japanese Association of Radio
Industries and Businesses (ARIB) has selected AAC as the audio coding
scheme for all Japanese digital broadcast systems, including
standard-definition television (SDTV), high-definition television
(HDTV), digital radio, and new multimedia services." AAC Broadcasting
will be officially launched in Japan this summer during the Olympics
Ceremonies broadcast on HDTV using Cirrus Logic's Crystal decoders.
"AAC is an emerging broadcast audio format in Japan, and Crystal
has been very aggressive in its pursuit of this market," stated Andrew
Fischer, business development manager for AAC at Dolby Laboratories.
"Crystal has taken a lead in offering chips that incorporate
multi-channel AAC decoding to support the new standard chosen by Japan
for its new digital broadcast systems."
"Our audio decoders today support all worldwide digital audio
formats being used in digital television broadcasting," confirmed
Terry Ritchie, vice president of DSP strategic marketing for the
Crystal Consumer Products Division. "These new Crystal decoders are
enabling the global entertainment experience as they are being
designed into next-generation digital TVs, set-top boxes and AV
receivers by most of Japan's leading OEMs."
Cirrus Logic is the only single supplier of high-performance,
multi-standard audio DSP decoders, DSP firmware, and high-resolution
data converters. This combination simplifies the rapid creation of
high-fidelity Internet-ready entertainment products. The CS49310 is
tailored for broadcast applications, and the CS49329 for AV receivers.
Unlike traditional decoders targeted individually for specific
regional markets, the new Crystal chips can execute the multiple
algorithms that are needed to adapt to different geographical digital
video markets. The single-chip solutions can decode diverse regional
standards that are now being used in Asia, Europe, Japan and North
America. Using one of these Crystal audio decoder chips, OEMs can now
manufacture set-top boxes, digital televisions and AV receivers that
are compatible with popular audio standards around the world. In
addition, as next generation TVs bridge to the Internet, these
decoders are designed to support both MP3 and AAC, the most popular
multi-channel Internet audio standards.

Price and Availability

The Crystal CS49310 and CS49329 DSP decoders are available today
and are priced at $20 each in OEM quantities.
