Ratbert, <HP will be able to sell Itanium systems (servers) with this added crucial feature, command a hefty premium for it, and so leave other Itanium system builders out in the cold.>

I didn't even know that HP had such a feature in their hands. In any case, I always thought that one of HP's motivations is to provide their PA-RISC customers an easier upgrade path toward IA-64 than other RISC guys. But if HP really does have such a feature on their hands, then more power to them. Of course, it's not a trivial task to keep up the software support.

Besides, I'm sure every potential vendor of IA-64 systems will have their own strategies on differentiation. Compaq will leverage their volumes and expertise on IA servers, Dell will try and commoditize the platform as much as possible, etc. It's quite a tricky situation for Intel to handle, since absolutely no one wants to be a mere Itanium boxmaker. (Except maybe eMachines ...)
