For those who want an entry level technical introduction and review of fiber optics and lasers, I suggest the books by Jeff Hecht:

Understanding Fiber Optics
and
Understanding Lasers

Both are in print, and IMO can be read by anyone with a smattering of college level science classes.

I agree with Pat though, this is not about rocket science and technology, but has more to do with basic market forces like supply and demand.
