Hey Clappy - Your AVNX - MSDW is quite bullish on it - price target of $175. I couldn't find anything to link to, but some of the owners have registered for sale of their shares. MCI is their primary account (you knew that already)...found this article on Bloomberg. Legs

Avanex to Showcase Its Revolutionary PowerShaper(TM) Slope and

Dispersion
Compensation Management Processors During NFOEC

FREMONT, Calif., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX), the global provider of photonic processors that enable next generation performance for optical communications networks, will demonstrate an array of applications for its PowerShaper(TM) Dispersion Compensation Management Processors during NFOEC 2000, in addition to demonstrating its PowerExchanger(TM) Fixed and Reconfigurable Add/Drop Multiplexing Processors.
Avanex will be in Booth #201. The annual National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference is being held Aug. 27-31 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

"The PowerShaper dispersion management processors are the most advanced and cost-effective solution to improving network performance in slope and dispersion compensation through a variety of different applications," Avanex President and CEO Walter Alessandrini said.

"We'll be demonstrating our new PowerShaper(TM) for 40 Gigabit applications with a wide passband, adjustable dispersion slope compensation, our PowerShaper(TM) variable dispersion compensation for C or L broadband operation, our PowerShaper8(TM) 23" rack mount shelf holder, housing 8 units and compatible with all fiber types, our Super PowerShaper(TM) variable high order dispersion and slope compensation processor, as well our switch-less reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing processor PowerExchanger(TM). We also will exhibit the full line of Avanex Photonic Processors being used by most major system integrators and domestic carriers including our new PowerMux NxG(TM) and PowerMux(TM), and our initial product PowerFilter(TM).

"The availability of our newly introduced PowerShaper processors offers customers reduced time to market, and along with other Avanex photonic processors such as the PowerMux and PowerExchanger, truly provides the 'Wavelengths in Abundance' to deliver next-generation communications services today. We'll be ready to take orders for the PowerShaper product family at NFOEC," said Alessandrini.

The PowerShaper demonstrations will include broadband, terminal side, in- line and 40 Gbps applications.

The PowerShaper and SuperPowerShaper(TM) Dispersion Slope Processor extend the transmission distance of fiber optic communications by compensating for the tendency of high bit rate data-carrying wavelengths of light to disperse as they travel over longer distances, which results in transmission errors and network bottlenecks.

Traditional solutions to dispersion compensation have several drawbacks, such as lack of tunability, large space requirements and the need for costly regeneration of the signal. In contrast, the PowerShaper offers the only tunable dispersion compensation method, which permits adjustment for different length network spans, has a highly compact footprint and substantially reduces the need for signal regeneration to achieve higher bit rate and longer transmission distances.

The PowerShaper's compact footprint will be particularly in evidence at the PowerShaper8 demonstration at NFOEC. The demonstration will feature eight variable PowerShaper processors in one compact 23-inch rack, each of which can be configured with a Windows CE handheld device. The compact footprint and cost-effectiveness of the PowerShaper8 make it ideal for terminal applications.

PowerShaper dispersion management processors offer broadband or terminal operation in the C or L bands, with no optical low linearity, low polarization mode dispersion and low ripple effect. They have a compact footprint and are compatible with all fiber types.

Avanex's other featured demonstration at NFOEC, the PowerExchanger(TM) Fixed and Reconfigurable Add/Drop Multiplexing Processors, offers "switchless" reconfigurable add/drop/express functions with ultra-low insertion loss. The highly integrated configuration enables a compact footprint and reduces fiber connection complexity.

Avanex's line of revolutionary photonic processors also includes the PowerMux(TM) and PowerMux NxG(TM) Wavelength Channel Processors, the PowerExpress(TM) Ultra Long-Haul Processor and the PowerFilter(TM) Wavelength Separator.
