Illegal Immigrant Population Grows to 5 Million

The number of illegal immigrants residing permanently in the United States has grown to about 5 million and is rising by 275,000 a year, the Immigration and Naturalization Service said yesterday.
In what federal officials called their most accurate calculation ever of illegal immigration, the INS estimated that this population has increased by 28 percent in the past four years alone. According to the new analysis, illegal immigrants now account for nearly 2 percent of the total U.S. population.
The new figure raised questions about the strategy of Congress and the Clinton administration to throw the great bulk of U.S. resources at the southwestern border with Mexico in efforts to combat illegal immigration.
According to the INS study, 41 percent of the illegal resident population, or 2.1 million people, originally entered the country legally at airports and other entry points but then overstayed their temporary visas. Of the net increase in the illegal population of 275,000 a year, about 125,000 a year are visa overstayers, the INS said.
Yet, while dramatically beefing up the U.S. Border Patrol, Congress did not appropriate funds for a relatively modest addition of 300 investigators to ferret out visa overstayers inside the country.

Bottom line: if 275,000 spongers can make it across the US/Mexican border each year, it shouldn't be that difficult for a team of professional hitmen to sneak into the US "sanctuary".... BTW, there're over 250,000 FBI-fugitives on the loose to reckon in as well. So, please George, don't take your fellow country(wo)men for a bunch of fools: most Americans are perfectly aware that they're not living in some inviolable cocoon.

C'mon! OK City, the heartland of the US?!? And what does that mean??? Face it, no one outside Oklahoma gives a toss about OK City --it's just not on any battlefield map! From a foreign standpoint, the so-called heartland of America looks rather like LA, or San Fransisco, or NY, or Chicago, or Miami, or Disneyland! For real, geopolitical terrorism, the target's locus does matter and there's no way for professional terrorists to waste their time and resources in blowing up some Oklahoma cowtown instead of, say, the mall on Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade.
Again, bear in mind some previous terrorist attacks:
--the Algerian junta wanted to send a clear message to France in 1996, hence they dispatched their hatchet man, Khaled Kelkal, to Paris, not Tourcoing!!
--when Basque ETA terrorists want to shatter the Spanish regime, they go for Madrid;
--when the IRA wanted to push Margaret Thatcher or John Major around, they went for London's shopping areas --on Xmas eve....
As for your pathetic "If they could strike there, they could strike ANYWHERE...", you poor old thing! THEY'VE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO KICK YOUR ASS WHEREVER AND WHENEVER IT'D SUIT THEM!! After all, even the White House can't be safeguarded against a kamikaze UAV.... And it's precisely because professional terrorists can hit you anywhere, anytime that, eventually, they thoughtfully cherrypick their target out of a high-profile selection. After all, it'd probably be easier for Osama bin Laden to lol around unnoticed in Central Park, NY than to carry out a reconnaissance job around OK City's Murrah building....
