And in all the runup to Willy, they never did a simulation?

C'mon, whatever the performance plusses and minuses of Willy (or Athlon) or Coppermine or ... they are are simulated to death well before silicon is seen. The architectural consequences are well known before the silicon hits the road. While the difficulties with Rambus were on the interface side, the raw architectural consequences of the design are known to a gnat's eyebrow.

When Athlon starts to use a double speed arithmetic unit, we'll find out how THEN it will be a great idea.

TWY, <(Q) How many smart Intel engineers does it take to screw in a light bulb?? (A) Both of them.>

I work for Intel, and I'm an engineer. Are you trying to insult my intelligence? (Or are you saying that I'm one of the two?) ;-)
