Hi Jack,

Re: 10G Ethernet is SONET? That is an eye opener.
That is one interpretation, of one segment of the IEEE802.3ae considerations. Remember the distinction between the MAN and the WAN. If you study the work of Bill St. Arnaud at CANARIE, 10GbE over dark fiber and DWDM will shut SONET out of the network. This is already occuring at GbE rates with Fortune 500 companies opting to lease dark fiber from the likes of MFNX, NOPT and LVLT and use their own termination gear. The only place that SONET comes into play is where the enterprise needs to internetwork with the PSTN. And those instances are becoming fewer and fewer as the unamplified range of CPE is approaching 100km. Thus, for example, many Bay Area companies would have no reason to use a carrier's SONET in a mesh network extending from Morgan Hill to Petaluma. Nor would a wire house with front offices at 85 Broad St. and a back office in Princeton. They can do the entire network in the familiar Ethernet vernacular. Neat, huh?

Best, Ray
