NTT faces Internet access threat

A new 14-company joint venture threatens NTT's dominant position in the Japanese Internet market, the Fi, a venture between Mitsui, U.S. telecoms company Rythms NetConnections nancial Times reported on Friday.

Garnet Communicationsand 12 others, including Cable & Wireless, aims to offer Internet access which will be cheaper and 10 times faster than the NTT service.

Mitsui and Rythms will both hold 34.34% of the firm, while C&W and Sumitomo will hold stakes of under 11% each. Smaller shareholders include France Telecom and AOL.

Capitalized at US$4.7 million, the company will begin service trials in Tokyo later this year and begin full service at an unspecified later date, with an IPO under consideration, the newspaper said.
