Antarctica is a very large continent. I don't believe that temperatures at the South Pole have ever gotten above freezing.

If by currently melting you mean that the ice located at the north pole is melting all day and has been for some time, then I do not think it is happening but if it is you are currect that it would be serious.

Tim,

I don't know how long it took (I imagine many, many days) to melt down but there is a mile wide stretch of ice that is now water at the North Pole.
