big spread in Mexico
Confused me a second, until I saw the title of the picture I posted. The cotton farm was a couple of miles inside the U.S. Close enough that we used to ride our horses into Mexico (and encourage the border patrol cars to chase us on the way back since we could jump or swim the canals and they would have to drive a mile to the next crossing while we ducked into other nearby farms and dissapeared, great fun).

The baler was owned by our neighbor and he generally drove it. He had one of those big wheel rakes, and I drove that on occasion. I started by driving a pickup that the bales were loaded onto (using a throttle because my feet couldn't touch the pedals). I graduated to snagging bales with a hook as we drove by and hauling them up. ( there would be two brothers walking on either side tossing bales to the fenders of the truck, then I would snag and place them). We could get the hay as much as two layers above the cab, but once in a while the tires would come completely off the rim under the load. It's more fun remembering than it was to do.
