Is it because he's shown them that he can use the cash to establish the far and a way leading diversified Internet retailer, with state of the art inventory management, top-notch customer service, and efficient fulfillment operations, establishing Amazon.com as the online company millions of shoppers think of first (and only, much of the time) when they want to buy something online which Amazon might sell?

Randy,

This all came about due to unlimited resources. All the e-commerce pure plays would have better customer service, more inventory, better distribution systems given that much cash with which to work. The cart came before the horse in this case.

Bezos made some major errors. He built more distribution centers than he needed intitally. There is nothing wrong with building them as they are needed when sales grow.

One reason Amazon is buring so much cash is the underutilization of these distribution centers. This is indicates a lack of experience in retailing. It appears Bezo was over zealous which was not at all necessary.
