Hi Gene Parrott; Another article on DRAM and Intel. One cannot help but realize that Intel's sudden zipped lips on memory cannot be good for Rambus. Their previous pronouncements have been almost entirely positive, for them to suddenly be very quiet can only mean one thing.

Intel Corp. has canned plans for a memory update and denied all media requests for interviews with a key executive at this week’s Intel Developers Forum (IDF).

At an IDF press preview last month, Intel said it was planning to go ahead with its traditional memory roadmap update.

“From a press point of view, you can expect to hear a good memory update,” Matt Haller, platform evangelism manager for Intel, said last month.

Not anymore.

“There’s no new news,” an Intel spokesperson said today.

Not only has the memory announcement been cancelled, but a key Intel executive has also been told not to talk to the media.

After steadfastly supporting Rambus direct DRAM (RDRAM) as the exclusive memory for its forthcoming Pentium 4 (P4) processor, Intel announced it was considering using cheaper memory last month. Confidential Intel documents leaked to Electronic News earlier this month showed SDRAM could be used for the P4’s introduction to the mainstream PC market in the third quarter of 2001.
