OT-Charles,
I am on your side most of the time in this argument that has raged here the last few days. However, I wouldn't be blaming Reagan for the debt. Reagan actually blew up the federal government and with it tax and spend liberalism when he prioritized defeating the Soviets. He viewed it as war and in war you spend whats necessary to win. The deficit and debt ballooned and the democratic Congress refused to cut back on other spending. When it was all over, we had won the cold war but had a huge debt. Since then the new democrats have led the way with conservative measures to reduce the debt. Reagan did us all a favor and made it possible for Clinton to become President and create this surplus which has fueled our nations growth. The question now is will the people of the US trust a democratic congress as well as President not to return to tax and spend? I am not sure and although i will probably vote for Gore I might vote for a Republican for the House.
As for Bush, he is running as Reagan but just like Papa Bush he is out of sync with the times. And unlike both of them he is totally unprepared for the job he is running for. He reminds me of Quail in 92. Could you imagine Quail having run for President in 92? In any case Bush will be Gored badly in the debates and Gore will win the election handily.
