Chartered, Lucent to Jointly Develop 0.13- to 0.08-Micron Technologies
August 22, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. of Singapore decided to continue to develop finer-line semiconductor chips jointly with Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group of the United States.

According to the new agreement, the two companies will invest US$700 million to develop 0.13 micron, 0.10 micron and 0.08 micron process technologies that will be applied to communications chip products with CMOS digital logic, mixed signal and embedded SRAM technologies. The chips will contain hundreds of millions of transistors on a single chip, six times higher than the integration level of current leading-edge products.

Chartered already has a facility in Fab 5 on its Singapore campus in a joint development program with Lucent , but the contract of both companies did not include an extension of 0.13 micron or less processes.

As part of the joint development activities, the companies will staff a new Bell Labs research and development team on Chartered's Woodlands campus in Singapore. These scientists and engineers will work with Bell Labs teams in Murray Hill, N.J., and Orlando, Fla., as well as with Chartered's technology development organization, to create a global 600-person R&D team focused on innovations in manufacturing technology.

According to William T. Cochran, director of Technology Development Systems at Lucent, Lucent selected Chartered as a partner to develop finer processes based on world-class manufacturing capability, state-of-the-art cleanrooms and a very short time to develop new processes.
