That was true for AOL because it was a service that alot of people felt they "had to have". However, with the commoditization of PC's, it's unlikely that people feel they "have to have" a CPQ computer.
In that sense, demand outstripping supply CAN lead people to purchase another brand...if the price and quality meet their needs.
I don't disagree with your overall point, because it is, in essence, correct. I once had an advertiser pull his ads because he said they were "too successful". I didn't understand what he meant, and checked into it. Turns out, it WAS too successful.....in bringing in the kind of clientele he didn't like (we'll leave the racial stereotyping issues aside....). BUT, success is success.
The fact is, demand outstripping supply is generally a good thing AS LONG AS it is managed properly. I think because of their supply structure, CPQ is one of the best companies to manage this.
