In fact, I do have some faith in the central government, not overwhelming, but some.

I think that people who show some respect for the experts, and take some trouble to learn something about the matters they are discussing, can form useful opinions. Generally, in fact, laymen are taking sides with one group of experts over another, when there are controverted matters. That is one of the reasons I do not mind our arguments on these matters, you actually have some idea of what you are talking about, and have read many of the relevant revisionists.

However, even in your case, I object to the ease with which you assume the stupidity or bad faith of those who were responsible for making the decisions on the ground. I am inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, especially on reactions to complex tactical crises, where I cannot possibly know what they had to work with in forming their judgments.

On the other matters: when talking about tax policy, I am generally following the lead of economists I respect, like Milton Friedman, and, in addition, I would never get into specific policy prescriptions, as opposed to general preferences, because I am not qualified. Similarly with regulatory policy. I am generally relying on someone I respect, when discussing a particular matter, and feel confident I grasp the issue enough to express an opinion that regulation should be as light as possible. I would never venture to prescribe specifics........

I thought we won the cold war. If we were half as bad as you suggest, the other side must have been absolutely bonkers. M
