Only my opinion, but if I were buying a new system today, I'd want Windows 2000. If for whatever reason, this was out of the question, I'd then opt for the newest OS available. Unlike cars, where I'd avoid newness at any cost, OS newness can be 'patched' easily. This inconvenience is offset by the rapid decline in support for 'yesterday' software.

I repeat, this is only an opinion. I'm still using Win98, but looking at the 'greener' pastures of W2K like a horse stretching his neck over the fence.

Cheers, PW.

My suggestion is get Windows ME. It has the same interface as Windows 98 so it will be easy for your daughter to use without reading the manual. She should be able to run all the old programs she is familiar with without any loss of productivity. Your daughter can then make use of the new features when they are needed.

I am with the crowd. Get the latest OS if you are purchasing a new computer. Things in general will work better because there will be more built in support for hardware and software.

On the other hand...I wouldn't run out and upgrade an existing setup to a new OS..at least not when it first comes out.

I used WinME beta since last winter and can says it's much preferred to Win98SE (and a great choice for new machines) - the self-healing/updating features make it ideal for home users who can mess up their systems installing other software/hw.

(i'm back on Win98 until Norton finishes updating it's firewall software (my preferred) for Millennium.)

I have win2k but haven't played with it since I was so busy on WinME, so I can't compare.
