Somoza was likely enough to fall, as you say, regardless of Soviet adventurism. But there were plenty of non- communist opponents of the regime, like the Chamorros, and without the Soviet/Cuban connection, it is unlikely the Sandanistas could have consolidated power without allowing for a broad coalition of parties.....I will not debate the particulars of China, except to say that charges have also flown against some of those who were anti- Chiang, like Owen Lattimore. I do not feel like I am up on the details enough.......In the end, it rather depends on what you mean by ideology. Do you think that believing the Nazis were bad and that we should defeat them was "ideological"?
