Coming from a poor southern state has, IMO, played a role (though in his case a relatively minor one) in his vilification. He made his bed, for sure, but as you said, that bed's springs were creaking long before he laid in it, and p.s. BLOWJOBS DON'T KILL PEOPLE. Presidents have been having affairs with women (and lying about them) for as long as men have been having affairs and lying about them. I don't condone that behavior, but it in no way surprises me or automatically makes a man presidentially unfit. Men lie about sex, and we lie about money--if not to others, then to ourselves. Clinton was a whipping boy for our collective sexual neuroses, and the magnitude of his whipping is in direct proportion to our illness.

What really gets me about the strident party identification we witness here is the attempt to set one party up as the paragon of morality and virtue. It ain't so. Never has been and never will be, and to pretend otherwise is so ignorant of the reality of human nature as to be truly laughable.

People are people no matter what hat(s) they wear.
