Samsung, Hyundai Electronics to Boost Output of 128 M Dram Chips
SEOUL, Aug 23 Asia Pulse - High demand has inspired Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Electronics Industries to dramatically increase their output of 128-M DRAM chips, industry sources said Wednesday.
Samsung will increase its monthly 128-M DRAM production to 15 million chips from September, up 50 percent from 10 million units at present.

By memory capacity, the number is equivalent to 30 million 64-mega chips and Samsung's 128-mega chip production will outnumber its 64-mega products which stands at 22 to 23 million units a month.

Hyundai also plans to gradually increase 128-mega chip production to 15 million by the end of the year from the present 6 million. The company will cut its 64-mega chip production to 41 million per month by the end of this year from 44 million now.

With a boom in the high-speed, high capacity personal computers, 128-mega chips are replacing 64-mega ones as a mainstay DRAM product.

The 128-mega chip market is more profitable than the 64-mega chip. A 128-mega chip sells at US$ 17-18 in the global spot market higher than the eight-dollar range for a 64-mega chip.

Globally, 128-mega chip production is expected to reach around 54 million units based on the 64-mega chips, outnumbering the 42 million 64-mega chips put on the market in the third quarter of this year. The amount of 128-mega chips is likely to triple that of 64-mega chips next year.
