Remember when Xeon meant server chip with large cache? What does Xeon mean now?
Looks like the Xeon brand is another casualty in the war with AMD.

Dan

Sure it looks that way, if you're looking through AMD lenses. It looks to me, if you want speed, intel's got speed. If you want large cache, intel's got large cache:

More expensive Xeons come with as much as 2MB of cache and can be used in four-processor configurations. The right chipset, Intel's Profusion design, allows two four-processor units to be grouped into an eight-CPU system

Of course, these Xeons may have trouble competing with AMD's current server chips..... Opps..... Never mind....

Sour grapes if I ever heard them. Xeon means Slot2. It's always meant slot2. AMD has no server chips Danny boy. SMP doesn't work. It's never worked. Intel's smallest L2 is as big as AMD's largest L2. Some day AMD will work the bugs out of their chips and get a server version out there but until that day you'll just have to stand outside with your nose pressed up against the window looking in.

Lewinsky-Dan - Re: "Remember when Xeon meant server chip with large cache? What does Xeon mean now?"

It means one - or two - LESS ATHWIPERS sold by AMD- since AMD has no competing product.

Dan, >Remember when Xeon meant server chip with large cache? What does Xeon mean now?

It means that Intel has three different processor chips that the OEMs are building into servers nowadays:

▪ Intel Pentium® III 933 MHz Processor
▪ Pentium® III Xeon™ 933 MHz
▪ Intel Pentium® III XeonTM 700 MHz Processors (up to 4) with 1-MB, or 2-MB L2 Cache

The first 2 are available in other clock speeds.
