Gerald, the answer is yes. I don't think a man elected to such office has to be accountable for his private life, well sort of! ggg He has to take every pre-caution to be discreet, but if he gets caught, then he has to pay.

I looked up the quotation. Basically Machiavelli was saying that a Prince must give the appearance of being a man of his word because it is expected, but he must be willing to lie, cheat, or steal whenever necessary. The man who actually does live by his word will fail because everyone else lies, cheats, and steals. He also said that the people who will know you by your false reputation will not believe the very few who know you by your acts.

Sounds like Clinton's philosophy to me.
