Maybe they're just afraid to die and that is the legacy left behind. Why do you go on living, Sir? Simple, I'm afraid to die!! Even a cow has more imagination than that, Pezz! A cow says, "GRASS!--I live for GRASS!" I know your purpose, Pezz. Your purpose is to hunt down PURPOSE, corner it, trap it, get it half way home...and get hit by a drunk driver. Self aware beings certainly have a personal purpose- at our most basic level we wish to survive. Even lower forms of life have this "purpose". Every action to survive requires will- to bring the fork to your mouth, to go to the kitchen to open the fridge, to go hunting on the Serengetti- if you lack purpose to live, wouldn't you lose the will to action to sustain your life? Doesn't every living thing that continues to live have, at the very least, the purpose of continuing to live? That's why you step out of the way of the speeding car, and read the medicine bottles carefully so you don't accidentally poison yourself- or at least that's what I do.
