If I remember correctly it was the "IAPX 432"

Daniel, yes, the iAPX432 would be a better antecedent than the i860. It too was designed with the latest ideas in computer science, and it too was a "ok, this version is just for the developers, just wait for version 2!". And it also was just about impossible to program in assembly and depended on it's own advanced compiler technology. I remember that there were a few companies that committed to it early on, and didn't even survive to the point of the death of the architecture.

Maybe Intel should resurrect Multibus so that they can have a board to put the Itanium on...
