Viking Components First to Receive SO-RIMM Validation Through Rambus Test Labs; Viking SO-RIMMs Offer High-Speed Bandwidth for Networking Applications

Story Filed: Tuesday, August 22, 2000 1:21 PM EST

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif., Aug 22, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Viking Components, one of the world's largest and fastest-growing manufacturers of OEM and upgrade component technology, Tuesday announced it is the first in the industry to receive validation through Rambus(R) test labs for its 64 MB 800 MHz SO-RIMM(TM) modules for networking and communications platforms.

Viking SO-RIMMs support the Sitera PRISM network processor used in networking and communications systems and are based on Rambus high-bandwidth, high-speed memory technology to maximize the processing speed of smart switches, routers and networking applications.

"Viking's Rambus-validated SO-RIMM products will benefit many of our advanced network equipment OEM customers who require a high-bandwidth memory solution to support the Internet's growing data traffic and other networking activities," said Richard Barrett, director of program management for OEM sales, Viking Components. "The Viking SO-RIMM offers the high-speed capabilities of Rambus technology in the smaller form factor to meet the industry trend towards smaller package design."

"Viking's investment in engineering and manufacturing as well as our close-working relationship with Rambus since 1998 has enabled us to be one of the first in the industry to deliver SO-RIMM samples to OEMs," said Shannon Biggs. "Validation from Rambus assures our customers that we are in compliance with Rambus specifications and that we produce only the highest quality modules."

Actually I think a great deal of laptop sales are based on replacing a large bulky desktop rather than needing portability.. So horsepower is very important, and battery use much less.

In general, I'd agree with you. But the article (which I promise to find shortly) said that they're going after 10% of the portable market (the ultralight segment).

p.s. Congrats to all the longs! I have about 100 messages to catch up on to see if there was any news. Missed most of today as we took our two older kids out on a "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" kind of day (they start kindergarten tomorrow).
